Get to Know NMTA's New Lobbyist
Please join us in welcoming Jay Balasbas, the newest member of NMTA’s lobby team, who joins Jay Jennings, NMTA’s VP of government affairs and lobbyist Roman Daniels-Brown, advocating on behalf of NMTA in Olympia. He has 24 years experience around the political and policy process, from managing a political campaign to legislative staff, Governor’s budget staff, utility regulator, and now a lobbyist.
Why are you excited to work with NMTA?
I’ve known about NMTA since I started my work as legislative staff and have always appreciated the strong advocacy and sensible positions the organization takes. I’m also excited to work alongside two colleagues I worked with for a number of years in the legislature, Jay Jennings and Roman Daniels-Brown. When I had the chance to meet with George for my final interview, I could tell right away how much he cares about the
Association, its members, and sportfishing. It’s great to see the passion NMTA members have.
How can NMTA members help you, Jay and Roman with your lobbying efforts?
The value of a personal connection cannot be overstated. Continue to meet with and develop relationships with local legislators and state agency leaders. Take a legislator fishing! The best outcomes from our advocacy stem from knowing who are our champions and who in
government we can have a reasonable conversation with to advance our issues.
What are some fun things NMTA members might be interested to learn about you?
I was born and raised in Hawaii, but ended up in Seattle for college (Seattle University alumnus) and have made this area my home.
My boys, (11 and 7.5) were excited to hear that I am doing work for NMTA because now they think I can buy a boat and take them fishing!
When I’m not lobbying or running around with my boys, you’ll find me out on the golf course. Anytime a NMTA member wants to tee it up, I am happy to make the time and play at a course close to their home. (Editor’s note: Jay’s time on the links has clearly paid off. The NMTA Lobby team Came in second in the recent NMTA Golf Tournament!)
To schedule that golf game with Jay or a time to have him walk you through how the state budget works, how utility rates are set for marine pilots or any number of other policy process issues you’re curious about, email him at Jay jmbstrategies@outlook.com
