Angling4Autism received a $1,000 grant from NMTA to expand their inclusive fishing programs for neurodiverse individuals and families. We spoke with Director of Operations John Carinha to learn more.
What does Angling4Autism do?
We provide fishing opportunities for individuals and families in the autism and neurodiverse communities. Our programming includes both day and multi-day fishing experiences, designed to create meaningful, inclusive outdoor recreation opportunities for all participants.
How did you use the NMTA grant funds?
The grant helped us expand our day program offerings. Specifically, we were able to purchase additional gear and add five more day program dates to our calendar. These extra sessions allowed us to serve an additional 20 individuals across five families who otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance to participate.
Would this expansion have been possible without the grant?
No. The NMTA funds directly enabled us to grow our capacity and impact more families. Our programming is entirely dependent on available resources, so every dollar translates into more access and more memories for the families we serve.
How does Angling4Autism support NMTA’s Grow Boating mission?
By getting more people—especially families with limited recreational access—onto the water, we’re opening the door to lifelong participation in boating and fishing. Our participants don’t just learn to fish—they gain awareness of conservation, fish biology, boating safety, and the joy of spending time on the water. We’ve seen many families come back again and even take up the sport themselves.
What would you like NMTA members to know about your organization?
Although “autism” is in our name, we serve the entire neurodiverse community. Our programs foster inclusion and give families a chance to connect in a supportive environment they may not find elsewhere. The impact goes far beyond just a day of fishing—it’s about connection, confidence, and community.
How can NMTA members help?
Boating and fishing are expensive endeavors, especially when you’re trying to make them accessible to underserved communities. Monetary donations make the most immediate and lasting impact. They help us cover equipment, fuel, permits, staffing, and other essential costs.
Where can people learn more or get involved?
