More than 25 high school welding students from across Washington gathered at Harbor Island Training Center in May for the inaugural Core Plus Maritime Student Competition in Shipyard Welding — an event aimed at strengthening the pipeline of skilled workers entering the maritime industry.
Hosted by Vigor Marine Group and supported by partners including SAFE Boats, Nordlund Boat, Brix Marine, American Seafoods, Western Towboat, Airgas, and Saf-Gard, the competition introduced students to shipyard welding using NAVSEA standards while testing welding, resume, and interview skills.
The event showcased the growing impact of Core Plus Maritime, which develops industry-supported maritime and industrial technology programs for K-12 schools. Despite state budget cuts, the program continues expanding through strong educator and industry collaboration.
For NMTA members facing workforce shortages, Core Plus Maritime offers a valuable connection to the next generation of skilled trades professionals.
